The Science Behind Mindfulness: Five Key Studies Every Mindfulness Teacher Should Know
Mindfulness has moved from an ancient contemplative practice to one of the most widely researched approaches to improving wellbeing. Today, thousands of scientific studies have explored how mindfulness can support mental health, emotional resilience, physical wellbeing, and quality of life.
For mindfulness teachers, understanding some of this research can help build confidence when talking to prospective students, healthcare professionals, employers, and educational organisations. It also reminds us of an important principle: mindfulness is not a miracle cure, but there is growing evidence that it can make a meaningful difference for many people when practised regularly.
Here are five landmark studies that have helped shape our understanding of mindfulness.
1. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): The Beginning of Modern Research
Jon Kabat-Zinn (1982 onwards)
When Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, few imagined how influential it would become.
His early studies showed that people living with chronic pain, stress and anxiety often experienced improvements in both physical and psychological wellbeing after completing the eight-week programme. More importantly, participants learned practical skills that helped them respond differently to life’s challenges.
These early findings laid the foundation for decades of mindfulness research and inspired mindfulness programmes around the world.

Mindfulness isn’t about eliminating difficult experiences—it helps people develop a healthier relationship with them.
2. Mindfulness Can Help Prevent Depression Relapse
Kuyken et al. (2015)
One of the strongest areas of evidence comes from Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).
A major international study led by Professor Willem Kuyken found that MBCT was as effective as maintenance antidepressant medication in helping prevent relapse in people with recurrent depression.
This research has influenced healthcare policy in many countries, including recommendations from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), where MBCT is recommended for people with recurrent depression.

This demonstrates that mindfulness has been rigorously evaluated within healthcare settings and can play an important role alongside other evidence-based approaches.
3. Mindfulness Supports Emotional Wellbeing
Khoury et al. (2013)
Rather than looking at a single study, researchers analysed over 200 previous studies involving thousands of participants.
This type of research, called a meta-analysis, provides one of the strongest forms of scientific evidence because it combines findings from many different investigations.
The review found that mindfulness-based interventions were associated with moderate improvements in:
- Anxiety

- Overall psychological wellbeing

Hölzel et al. (2011)
Advances in brain imaging have allowed researchers to explore what happens inside the brain during mindfulness practice.
One widely discussed study found measurable changes in brain regions involved in:

Although neuroscience is still evolving, these findings suggest that regular mindfulness practice may support the brain’s natural ability to adapt and learn—a process known as neuroplasticity.

More recent studies have explored mindfulness in many different settings, including schools, universities, hospitals, workplaces and community organisations.
Although results vary depending on the programme and participants, researchers have consistently found that mindfulness can support:
- Stress management
- Emotional resilience
- Self-awareness
- Compassion
- Quality of life
- Workplace wellbeing
Researchers also continue to explore how mindfulness can be adapted for different cultures, communities and populations, helping make training more inclusive and accessible.

What Does This Mean for Mindfulness Teachers?
Research gives us confidence that mindfulness can have a positive impact, but it also reminds us to communicate responsibly.
As teachers, we should avoid promising specific outcomes or suggesting mindfulness works for everyone in the same way. People’s experiences differ, and mindfulness is only one part of supporting wellbeing.
Instead, we can confidently say that a growing body of scientific research suggests mindfulness-based programmes can help many people improve their wellbeing, manage stress more effectively, develop greater emotional awareness and build resilience.
This balanced approach reflects both the evidence and the values of mindful teaching.
Building the Evidence at Mindfulness Now
The wider scientific evidence is now complemented by our own growing research programme.
A recent independent study conducted by researchers at the University of Lincoln found encouraging outcomes among graduates of Mindfulness Now teacher training. Participants reported improvements in wellbeing, emotional resilience, professional confidence and a strong sense of community.
As a small pilot study, the findings provide an encouraging foundation while also highlighting valuable lessons that will inform future larger-scale evaluations.
Together, the wider research literature and our own independent evaluation continue to strengthen the evidence base for mindfulness teaching.
